Public Works Operator Assistant

The City of Rufus is seeking an assistant to the Public Works Operator Compensation: $20.00/hr. with benefits

Job Description: As an assistant to the Public Works Department, you will be involved in a

variety of essential tasks. These include servicing water meters, maintaining water and sewer

lines, street upkeep, operating equipment, and intermittently managing water and sewer

treatment facilities. Additionally, you will contribute to landscaping efforts—mowing, weeding,

trimming, and irrigation. Your role will support the City’s day-to-day operations.

Desired Qualifications:

Age: Must be 18 years or older.

Driver’s License: Possess a valid driver’s license.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Skills:

 Ability to operate, repair, and maintain the water/wastewater treatment plant facilities to

control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent;

 Prepares required reports/logs and maintain complete and accurate records

 Daily monitoring of gauges, meters, and control panels

 Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings

 Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control

 Starts and stops pump, engines, and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment

processes

 Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings

 Collects samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses

 Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties on all city properties

including water, sewer, streets and community center

 Operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of city service grounds, facilities, streets,

storm water, wastewater, parks and recreation areas and fleet maintenance.

 Ability complete the Oregon Wastewater & Water certification exams

 Performs other duties as required

Physical Demands: The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in extreme weather

conditions.

Training Opportunity: The City is open to training the right applicant, even if they have fewer

qualifications for the position.

District Wastewater & Water Treatment Plants including maintenance of equipment, quality

control/testing and day-to-day activities as well as public works support in water treatment and

overall city maintenance.
